The movie "Underworld"
is an action packed film about the war between the lycans(werewolves) and
vampires. Warning, this review contains some spoilers.
The movie has several key characters. Most attractive and
interesting of these is
Selene a vampire death dealer. She is one of many
vampires that hunts and kills lycans. The war between
the two species has raged on for centuries and the vampires have a clear
edge. They are working to completely exterminate the
lycans. From the very beginning you get the impression
that nobody, at least nobody doing the hunting, has the slightest
clue why they are fighting, they just are.

clue why they are fighting, they just are.
The war is no longer using just the
supernatural powers each creature has but advanced weapons
targeted at more effectively killing one another. This adds
a great deal to the movie as we can see that even supernatural
beings are using advancing technology. The movie
starts out with a group of vampire "death dealers" hunting several
lycans. A fight ensues in the subway between the two.
The lycans sense the vampires and open fire with machine guns.
They are in a populated area so neither changes into their more
powerful form. Selene notices that the lycans appeared
to be following one man, Michael. Once the fight moves into
the subway tunnels the lycans change. You can see the
raw power of their form but the vampires speed and quick thinking
seem to give them the overall advantage.
As the story continues Selene realizes that Michael was being
followed. She tries to convince Kraven, the current vampire leader of
this but he doesn't seem to care. She decides to look into it.
Michael becomes a key player in the story although this review won't
discuss that any further to avoid ruining the movie. When watching the
movie you get the impression that neither the vampires nor the lycans
are truly evil, they are just fighting to survive. We discover that
vampire law prohibits them from drinking human blood, at least in most
cases. The lycans also do not purposely go around killing innocents,
although rage seems to affect their judgment at times.
We discover that the vampires and
lycans carry a virus that kills most humans but sometimes when
one becomes infected they turn. This is unique as most
fiction about these creatures indicates that anyone bitten will
turn, so this becomes a very unique twist. It also becomes
critical to the plot. We do get to see Viktor, a very old
vampire, get awakened and do some fighting. Apparently age
makes one stronger in the case of a vampire. Eventually we
find that much of the recorded history of each of these two
creatures is actually a lie and the real history is revealed.
This back story is really what makes the film great. The
rift between these fictional beings and how it came to be is
fascinating and is played out very well.
This movie gets 4 out of 5 stars from
this reviewer. It has plenty of action and gore. The
plot seems to be strong and the story has a logical progression.
At times the movie feels slightly rushed but we still learn a lot
about both the lycans and the vampires. Overall the
movie was very good and I would highly recommend it to anyone who
likes these fictional creatures.
