Google Chrome has been making huge strides recently, especially in terms of speed. It's sandbox'd nature also is a huge benefit to make exploitation difficult (not impossible). The biggest lacking I've found is a NoScript like extension (similar to Firefox's). Well there is a new extension out called NotScript for Chrome that provides at least some level of script filtering. Of course you can use Chrome's own built-in script protection but that only gives you the option of whitelisting every single script, no matter what the source, for a given site, or block them all. NotScript, at least for a first release, appears to offer at least some added protection while still giving the fine grained control that NoScript gave us in Firefox.

Running linux with the proprietary ATI driver (fglrx) and having issues with jumpiness or tearing? If so here are a few tips and tricks:
1) If you can, use the open source driver. This works far better for tearing. Reasons not to are:
a) Using a system where you want power management for either temperature control or power saving
b) You have an HD 5xxx series radeon
2) Enable textured video syncing(in /etc/X11/xorg.conf):
Section "Device"
..............
Option "TexturedVideoSync" "on"
EndSection
3) Enable vertical syncing(in /etc/X11/xorg.conf):
Section "Device"
................
Option "Capabilities" "0x00000800"
EndSection
4) Install Compiz (this is a big one). Compiz has a video acceleration plugin which works wonders for reducing tearing and jumpiness. Very effective. |

Free ATI drivers with Power Management |

Running a Linux system and have an ATI card? Wish that it had better power management for heat and/or battery life? Normally the only power support you'd get is the binary driver from ATI but now the open source Radeon driver is starting to support power management. Just follow these simple instructions to get the open source radeon driver working with power management:
-
First make sure you back up the existing radeon (radeon_drv.so) and ati (ati_drv.so) drivers.
-
Install the xorg-dev, mesa-dev, and xserver-dev packages for your distro. The usual build tools are needed too (autoconf, automake, libtool, gcc and others)

git-clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati
-
cd xf86-video-ati
-
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
-
make
-
sudo make install or make install as root
